Lindsey Cummins( Louisville Grows) Opening Reception:
Friday, June 13⋅5:00 – 8:00pm @ 1641 Portland Ave, Louisville, KY 40203 (Louisville Grows)
Louisville Grows CPI
As part of a multi-artist installation at Louisville Grows, LVA is proud to present three site-responsive works that transform the rooftop into an immersive, evolving environment. Artists Azucena Trejo Williams and Nathaniel Hendrickson will install hand-formed ceramic slabs onto the bridge structure, shaped organically to mirror the natural landscape. These pieces will respond to wind and rain, producing subtle sound and environmental changes over time. Nearby, Jessica Chao and Claire Krüeger will suspend a translucent, embroidered textile from a custom-built extension at the four corners of the fencing. Inspired by the crown shyness effect in tree canopies, the naturally dyed fabric will fade with time while the embroidery endures—visually linking to the quilt-like mural below. On the rooftop platform, artist Peter Price will carve five persimmon tree stumps donated by Limbwalker, transforming them into sculptural seating and tables. Each stump will feature engraved drawings and will be partially hollowed for ease of use. All three installations are being realized in collaboration with creative consultant and contractor Brad Titzer, who is supporting the structural integration of each element—from a pulley system for the textile piece to a rooftop platform that supports the tree stumps.
Bridge Installation by Azucena Trejo Williams & Nathaniel Hendrickson:
As part of this site-specific installation, artists Azucena Trejo Williams and Nathaniel Hendrickson will incorporate a series of ceramic slabs onto the bridge structure. These hand-formed pieces will feature organic shapes that echo the surrounding natural landscape. Designed to be responsive to the environment, the ceramics will interact with elements such as rainfall and wind, producing subtle sounds and environmental shifts over time. This evolving installation invites viewers to experience the artwork not as a static object, but as a living component of the landscape—shaped by nature, time, and chance.
Textile Installation by Jessica Chao & Claire Krüeger
Artists Jessica Chao and Claire Krüeger propose a dynamic textile installation that will be suspended from a custom-built extension at the four corners of the existing fence. Utilizing a fabricated pulley system, the translucent textile can be raised and lowered, creating an interactive element within the space.
The fabric will feature intricate embroidery inspired by the natural phenomenon of crown shyness—where the upper branches of trees maintain space between one another, forming delicate, lace-like patterns in the canopy. Dyed with natural pigments, the textile will fade over time, while the embroidery remains—a poetic reminder of resilience and transformation.
Echoing the quilt-like composition of the adjacent mural, this piece weaves together themes of nature, memory, and community, bridging the visual and conceptual elements of the site.
Installation: Artists are working with creative consultant and contractor Brad Titzer to install the shade piece and ensure a secure and functional design integration.
Persimmon Tree Stump Installation by Peter Price
Five persimmon tree stumps—generously donated by Limbwalker—will be transformed by artist Peter Price into functional, sculptural pieces. Each stump will feature hand-carved drawings etched directly into the wood, blending natural form with artistic storytelling. To make them more manageable and versatile, the stumps will be partially hollowed, allowing them to serve as both seating and tables.
Installation:
Artist is collaborating with creative consultant and contractor Brad Titzer to construct a wooden platform on the rooftop. This platform will act as both flooring and a structural support system, accommodating the weight of the stumps while ensuring a safe and stable installation.
