Donate without Loss: Artwork Exploring the Healing Arts Kaviar Gallery is providing a showcase for visual artists exploring the various components of health and medicine. Through this show we hope to shed light on the prevalence of medicine in our lives. We also wish to raise awareness for blood/bone marrow stem cell donation, and the fact that it's no longer an invasive procedure in over 90% of cases. It's now similar to donating blood, though it takes a bit longer. There is a critical need for donors; the average person currently only has a 60% chance of finding a match. For non-Caucasian ethnicities, the chance of a match falls to only 20%. Many people, including professional medical practitioners, believe blood/bone marrow stem cell donation to be a very painful procedure. In fact, it starts with one receiving a shot that stimulates the bone marrow to release stem cells into the bloodstream. Four to five days later, one returns to the clinic to have blood taken from one arm. The stem cells are filtered out and the blood is returned to the other arm. Many choose to have a temporary IV catheter placed for convenience (not necessary/required). The procedure takes about 4 hours, a small price to pay for a saved life. The donor's stem cells then easily replenish.

Kaviar Gallery will host members of the Blood & Marrow Transplant program of University of Louisville Brown Cancer Center who will be taking cheek swabs and signing people up for inclusion on the blood/bone marrow donor list. This will be happening during the FAT Friday gallery hops on the following evenings: May 26, June 30, July 28 and August 25. Please note that getting on the list does not commit that person to donation - individuals may choose not to serve as a donor.

In order to get the word out about the importance of donor need, we are looking for $7,000 to cover the cost of a billboard and media advertising. All checks should include "Donate without Loss." Checks lacking this information could result in funds being applied incorrectly.

Any checks should be sent to: Louisville Visual Art, Attention: FSP Donate without Loss, 1538 Lytle Street, Louisville, KY 40203. Any donation can be a 501(c)(3) tax deduction. If you or your organization can help with any portion of this, contact Craig Kaviar or cell 502-938-6762.
