Additional information: Churchill Downs, the Breeders' Cup and Louisville Visual Art are partnering to create an opportunity for one local artist to be showcased as the Official Artist of the 2018 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The Breeders’ Cup would like to create artwork to commemorate its 35th running on Nov. 2 & 3 at Churchill Downs Racetrack. The official artwork will be integrated into various consumer touch points to promote the Breeders’ Cup event. Artwork submissions will be juried down to five (5) finalists. The five finalists will each receive a $500 stipend and their artwork will be on display during Downs After Dark presented by Budweiser on Stephen Foster Night: June 16, 2018. Fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite artist/artwork onsite and online. Out of the five finalists, one will be selected as the Official Artist of the 2018 Breeders’ Cup World Championships. That selected artist will receive $2,500 and their artwork featured on promotional materials including the cover of the Official Breeders’ Cup program, website homepage, hotel key cards, and event-related collateral. Artwork submitted must translate to 8.5” x 11” portrait format. Submissions should be high res .jpg or vector .eps digital files.
The artwork should be reflective of key attributes associated with the Breeders’ Cup brand. Specifically, those include: prestige, aspiration, luxury, lifestyle and world-class. The artwork should capture this positioning while also keeping the Breeders’ Cup’s core purpose – Championship horse racing – front and center.
This year’s event will be held at the legendary Churchill Downs Racetrack. This will be the ninth time, but the first since 2011, that the Breeders’ Cup will be held under the iconic twin spires at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Breeders’ Cup utilizes a few core visual elements in its creative. Some, but not necessarily all, should be incorporated into the artwork where possible. These elements include:
Championship Horses on the track or in the paddock
Style / Fashion elements (fascinators on women; fedoras on men)
Sophistication elements (i.e., champagne glass)
Local elements should also be pulled into the artwork to help identify the 2018 host site location as well as the host city of Louisville:
There is no better visual element to identify Churchill Downs as their iconic twin spires.
Elements representing the local Louisville community are left to artist interpretation
Ultimately, there will be two visually distinct but connected pieces of art created by the winning artist. One will be used to brand Breeders’ Cup Friday and one for Breeders’ Cup Saturday. The Friday creative should be more focused on the atmosphere/fashion/lifestyle elements while Saturday should have a strong focus on the beauty and pageantry of the world championship horse-racing that Breeders’ Cup conducts.
The artwork to be submitted for the contest should be focused on Breeders’ Cup Saturday. Once a winner is selected, they will be required to develop a second piece of art for the Friday artwork.
