Sarah Katherine Davis received her Bachelor in Fine Arts from the University of Louisville with a focus in photography. She has taught photography classes for The Academy of LVA since 2011 and enjoys them immensely. In addition to teaching, Sarah runs her own photography business (photographing over 70 weddings since 2010!) and works with start-ups to create the imagery to share their narrative.
What do you hope your students take away from your class?
My goal is for each of my students to master the fundamentals of photography during my introductory course (i.e aperture, shutter speed, and ISO) and then take those skills and apply them to create images they are passionate about. I also do my best to make sure students have a basic understanding of the less "fun" side of the photography world, so we cover things like the importance of having a contract and model releases as well. I want each student to leave feeling confident in their abilities and inspired to try new things!
What is your favorite thing to teach and why?
This is such a hard question! I'm really passionate about self portraiture— I love the vast array of themes that self portraits can explore and sharing some of my favorite photographers with my students. I think it's a wonderful way for the class to get to know each other and really open up— paving the way to explore more in-depth concepts with my students.
