Water Tower Regional

On Sunday January 24, 2010 the Louisville Visual Art Association hosted over 500 artists, patrons, and community members at the opening reception to the 2010 Water Tower Regional exhibition. At the reception, LVAA awarded over $5,000 in cash awards to artists in the exhibition in all mediums. The excellence awards were chosen by local artists Frank Weisberg, Judy Warren, Ed Hamilton and Lida Gordon. The exhibition’s juror, Churchill Davenport chose the merit award winners.

The Frank F. Weisberg Award for Excellence in Painting: $1,000Boris Zakic, Georgetown KY

The Mary Louise Schrodt Award for Excellence in Realism: $1,500Amanda Greive, Edinsburg IL

The Barney Bright Award for Excellence in Sculpture: $1,500 Brad Meredith, Louisville KY

The Eugene Leake Award for Excellence in Printmaking and Textiles: $1,000C.J. Pressma, Louisville KY

The Norman Kohlhepp Merit Awards: $200 eachGayle Cerlan, William Duffy, Claudia Hammer, Matthew Weir, Brad White

About the Exhibition:

The Water Tower Regional, first held in 1909, is the oldest competitive juried art exhibition in the Southeast and Midwest regions. Hosted by the Louisville Visual Art Association, Kentucky's oldest arts organization, the exhibition will feature artwork from artists in Kentucky and surrounding states. The opening reception will feature exhibiting artists, the juror, Churchill Davenport, and the awards ceremony.

LVAA will award four awards in excellence and five merit awards. The Frank F. Weisberg Award for Excellence in Painting: $1,000. The Mary Louise Schrodt Award for Excellence in Realism: $1,500. The Barney Bright Award for Excellence in Sculpture: $1,500. The Eugene Leake Award for Excellence in Printmaking and Textiles: $1,000. The Norman Kohlhepp Merit Awards: $200 each.

Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday 9AM-5PM, Sunday Noon-4PM.

Free for LVAA members, $2 for students/seniors, $3 for non-members


Juror: Churchill Davenport
Churchill Davenport received his B.A. in Philosophy and Religion from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. He holds an M.A. in Psychology from Indiana University and an M.F.A. in Painting from Yale School of Art. He has taught extensively at colleges and universities, including, Maryland Institute College of Art, Yale University, Delaware College of Art and Design, and the Pratt Institute. Davenport has been the recipient of two painting fellowships in Haiti through the Episcopal Diocese of Washington D.C. He has been a juror for the Stamford Art Association and served on the Board of Trustees for the Pratt Institute.
