Peace-stick construction at Planned Parenthood with artist Collis Marshal

The Open Doors program was invited to lead a creative interactive workshop during Planned Parenthood’s annual Community Yard Sale, which hosted 225 attendees. Artist Collis Marshal prepared a Talking Stick art activity—based on Native American tradition— having created their own talking stick decorating driftwood with various beads, buttons, strings, and creative emblems. The activity allowed participants who were mainly ESL (English as a Second Language) youth the confidence and authority to practice speaking English in a trusted group setting.
