“An exhibition like DinnerWorks makes outstanding contemporary art accessible to people who otherwise
might shy away from visiting a more conventional art museum or gallery space. Part of LVAA’s mission in
DinnerWorks is to demonstrate that fine art is meant to be lived with ... and it is for everyone.”
Linda Cowan, President LVAA Board of Directors
DinnerWorks, the Louisville Visual Art Association’s annual roster of special events surrounding the exhibit of original, hand-made dinnerware and designer decorated tables, is set to open January 19, 2008 at Louisville’s historic Water Tower, 3005 River Road, Louisville. The basic premise of the DinnerWorks exhibit pairs 15 dinnerware artists, chosen by the exhibit curator, and 15 artist/designers, chosen by the DinnerWorks committee, to create displays of hand-made dinnerware and uniquely designed table installations. This will be the 21st year for DinnerWorks and, despite its long run, this Louisville Visual Art Association tradition never fails to surprise or delight the patrons who return every year to see an inspired translation of the potter’s art or a fresh interpretation of the designer’s style. At DinnerWorks, it seems there is always something new to say about the way we dine, the environments in which we do so, and the utensils we use.
Each year in November, the 15 designated DinnerWorks designers converge on the Louisville Visual Art Association’s Water Tower location to choose the individual sets of dinnerware around which they will design their tables. Designers pull a number out of a hat to determine the order in which they get to choose. Once the dinnerware is chosen, the designers get to work pulling together all the elements that will make up their table designs for the exhibit.
Many will design, or collaborate with other artists to design, the actual table upon which the dinnerware will be placed. There is no restriction on theme and often the designers will create an entire mise en scène within the approximately 9’ x 11’ space allotted to each designer for set up in the Grand Hall of the Water Tower.
The DinnerWorks exhibit runs January 22 through March 1, 2008. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 9am-5pm; Saturdays, 9am-3pm; Sundays, noon-4pm. We will have extended hours Thursday, February 21 and 28 until 7:30 p.m. The cost for viewing the exhibit is $3 for members and $4 for non-members. This years’ DinnerWorks Curator is Sarah Frederick and Chair is Elizabeth Wortham Rallis.
