Communications Coordinator

At the relatively tender age of 25, Mary Margaret Carlton can claim a worldliness that would be the envy of most people. An experienced traveler and student of developing cultures, she has
developed a world view and commitment to social change that is reflected in her thoughtful and
provocative art work.
Raised by parents who were dedicated missionaries, she spent most of her upbringing living in
Pacific Rim countries such as Singapore and, in fact, considers Penang, Malaysia her hometown, having graduated from Dalat International School. It was only at the age of 17 that Mary Margaret finally settled in Kentucky, enrolling at Georgetown College (2006) in pursuit of a degree in Art. While a student, she was very active in art and theatre organizations. As an artist she participated in
numerous exhibitions, graduating Cum Laude and also departing with a considerable range of
experiences.
Mary Margaret has chosen to remain in Kentucky and pursue professional goals consistent with the aesthetic sensibility that drives her personal work, first through an internship with LexArts, in
Lexington, KY, where she was first introduced to the business of art. Her work there, in particular
her focus on the development and documentation of public art initiatives, proved to be the perfect
preparation for her next role, as a member of the team behind The Sculpture on Campus Tour, an
ambitious project of ongoing sculpture installations in Georgetown, KY.
Now a permanent resident in Louisville, Mary Margaret spends her free time teaching art and participating in art outreach programs fueling her belief that art can help create social and economical change. Mary Margaret is happy and excited to have joined the staff at the LVAA. In a brief period of time she has moved from part-time administrative support to a valued, integral full-time professional responsible for Membership and Communications in the regions oldest non-profit visual art organization.
