As a run up to the upcoming Blue Man Group performances at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, the students of the Portland Neighborhood’s  Arts Magnet, Western Middle School, have been working with Louisville Visual Art Association Open Doors program artist, Tara Remington, and Christopher Rabe to produce Project Blue Drum, a huge and exciting Blue Man inspired installation that will land on the Center’s Main St. steps March 2.

Ms. Remington has been leading two classes of 6th and 7th grade students for twelve-weeks through every detailed step of constructing and decorating the 16-foot sculpture. Three Blue Man sculptures will be seen climbing up the side and above the cylinder will be white pipes and glass blown droplets designed by the students on a field trip to Flame Run, one of Louisville’s finest local Glass Art Studios. Lighting will beam at the glass droplets and refract color, shining dynamic reflections through the windows of Kentucky Center for the Arts. Blue footprints will also lead viewers from down the street to the sculpture and right up to the Kentucky Center entrance. It has been just awesome to watch the  students develop their creative skills and learn how to create art that can be incorporated into everyday life.

Thanks to the hard work of PNC Broadway in Louisville’s efforts to bring the
Blue Man Group show here and get this project started, the students’ work will remain on display  at 6th and Main St.  from the unveiling on First Friday March 2nd, when  tickets go on sale, until after the last performance on April 15th.

Just as exciting as the flurry of creative spirit at Western, each participating student is receiving a complimentary pass to a BMG performance, including a backstage tour!

Please come out and join us in celebrating the youth of Portland for the unveiling of Project Blue Drum on the front steps of The Kentucky.
