Stephen Driver’s commitment and artistic style focus on the aesthetic aspects of unifying form and function. For eighteen years Driver produced a line of functional ware from a home and studio he built in the Ozarks of Northwest Arkansas. The desire to further explore the aesthetics of ceramics led Driver to amaster of fine arts degree at the University of Georgia working under Ron Meyers. He is currently a Professor of Art at Brescia University in Owensboro Kentucky.
This dinnerware, when stacked gives an impression of ancient Asian architecture. These designs work as a series of forms with asymmetrical, geometric, rhythmic, and textural qualities. The work also combines functionality of form with decoration in its use of Shino glaze dusted with wood ash, thereby creating a good backdrop for a wide variety of foods. This quality allows Driver’s work to be found in many discerning kitchens.
