The 2011 Children’s Fine Art Classes Alumni Exhibition showcases recent graduates from the CFAC program and their contemporary work. The CFAC program excels in creating and encouraging young artist’s talents to emerge for the community to enjoy. The following five artists are fine examples of previous students who continue to share their appreciation of art with the community.

Kayla Bischoff

Kayla Bischoff is a young, practicing artist from Louisville, Kentucky. She graduated from Mercy Academy where she received numerous recognitions for her artwork on both local and regional levels, including a Scholastic Art Award.  She participated in Children’s Fine Art Classes from 2008 to 2010 under the guidance and instruction of Carmen Cabrera and Dennis Whitehouse.  As she graduated from Mercy Academy, she was offered over $50,000 in art scholarships.

Kayla’s work explores the world around us, as well as the subconscious mind. She is currently expanding her art knowledge and earning her undergraduate degree at Bellarmine University.

Laura Roth

Laura Roth’s passion for art began in elementary school. Her elementary teacher, Ms. Woods, encouraged and recommended her for the Children’s Fine Arts Classes when she was in 2nd grade. Under the instruction and advice of CFAC instructor Bob Bryant, Laura grew as a draftsman and was accepted at DuPont Manual for the Magnet Visual Art Program.

Throughout high school, Laura worked with Ms. Wilma Bethel which helped her develop her painting abilities. After working with instructor Matthew Meers, Laura felt confident in her potential as a talented artist and studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.

She is currently an elementary teacher with Jefferson County Public Schools.

“I am so appreciative of all those years of CFAC classes that I am now trying to instill the love of art the CFAC classes gave me to the young students I teach.”

Ben Sears

Ben’s love for the arts began at an early age. In high school he received several honors for his artwork, including a Silver Medal for his Photography Portfolio through the Scholastic Art Competition. He was also accepted to attend the Governor’s School for the Arts program in Kentucky.

Ben participated in the Children’s Fine Art Classes from 2002 through 2005. He developed his skill for art under the encouragement and instruction of Matt Meers and Dennis Shaffner.

He is a recent graduate from the University of Louisville and is currently pursuing musical and artist endeavors around Louisville.

He has written about art, history and culture for a variety of Twin Cities-based publications and websites, including mnartists.orgRain Taxi, Art Review and Preview!Mpls. St. Paul, and heavytable.com. His essays have appeared in publications of the Walker Art Center and the McKnight Foundation.
